Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

  • Drive implementation of our division automation strategy across multiple manufacturing plants.
  • Primarily, this engineer will lead or play a significant role delivering large capital projects that result in transformative cost reduction across the business while improving safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leverage industry knowledge to identify new automation opportunities.
  • Actively participate and/or direct all phases of automation projects including design, fabrication, off-line integration and testing, installation, production start-up support, training of plant personnel and technology transfer.
  • Prepare capital appropriations requests including analysis of existing operations, estimation of project costs, and justification of proposed actions.
  • Manage work to schedule and budget.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing leaders including Operations, Engineering, IT, Safety, Facilities, and Supply Chain for successful project implementation.
  • Work with outside automation vendors to specify, develop, and commission equipment and processes.
  • Participate in or lead installation, startup, testing, and debug of new or modified equipment.
  • Develop technical specifications, including mechanical requirements and automation and controls functionality and design.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in control systems (PLC, HMI, Drives etc.,), system integration, sensors, and electro-mechanical devices.
  • Develop control architectures, control functional specification, and system integration requirements that will satisfy process and manufacturing requirements.
  • Develop bid documents for the procurement of automation equipment.
  • Direct the activities of internal and external resources during the completion of project work, process troubleshooting, and machine improvement activities.
  • Collaborate with plant and quality engineering to establish and execute equipment acceptance and validation protocols.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for automated mechanical systems, electrical controls, and robots.
  • Train engineers and technical support personnel as needed.
  • Support operations with controls issues.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, or related engineering field. MS desired.
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in manufacturing, with track record of automation project implementation.

Travel Requirements:

  • Domestic travel up to 50% and may vary considerably depending on project load.
  • International travel is possible.

Work Schedule:

  • Typically, 45 hours/week but could be more depending on project requirements.
  • Night and/or weekend work is possible.

Required Skills:

  • Mastery of basic engineering concepts across all disciplines, with strong technical knowledge in controls system design and automation.
  • Possesses strong technical curiosity and ability to use engineering skills to fundamentally solve technical problems.
  • Ability to manage capital projects >$1M. Strong fundamental understanding of electrical design practices, control systems integration, controls architectures, PLCs (Allen Bradley preferred), electro-mechanical drive systems, vision systems, risk assessment, and safety systems.

Additional Desired Skills:

  • Experience deploying Automated Mobile Robots (AMR) or Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) in a manufacturing environment.
  • Machine vision experience including algorithm development, coding, and use of industrial cameras/vision. Six Sigma/DMAIC experience.
