Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Title:Packaging Engineering Supervisor

Location:Reynosa, Mexico

Scope of Position

The purpose of this position is to provide overall responsibility of development and execution of the Packaging Engineering strategy and team located in the Reynosa, Mexico campus. Specific responsibilities include the design, development and implementation of packaging materials and solutions for new products, the standardization/ optimization of existing packaging solutions to deliver improvements in cost, new technologies/ materials, capability, quality and providing technical expertise with manufacturing, business teams/ commercial to provide support for packaging related needs or issues.

Day to Day Responsibilities

  • Lead/ Manage group of packaging engineers in the Reynosa, Mexico campus
  • Provide supervision, coaching/ mentoring, career development, training opportunities
  • Serve as the subject matter expert in Reynosa for packaging materials, design, technologies and interface with engineering, manufacturing, quality, logistics and global pkg team
  • Identify and execute packaging improvement opportunities to deliver cost, quality and capability improvements for new innovations and existing products

  • Qualify new or cost improved package designs and ensure product reliability
  • Generate appropriate technical test plans and documentation to support packaging design changes
  • Collaborate and interface with packaging material suppliers to identify and develop new materials, cost savings on existing pkg and optimized design opportunities
  • Share best practices and collaborate with other packaging engineers within and across global regions
  • Serve as mentor and provide technical guidance to Reynosa based packaging engineers
  • Provide technical expertise to support manufacturing packaging issues or customer quality related issues related to packaging

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Packaging Engineering from accredited university program
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in packaging design engineering roles
  • Minimum of 3 years leading direct reports and projects

Required Skills

  • Experience in Leading a team of direct reports and interns
  • Advanced and demonstrated knowledge of packaging processes, designs, and materials
  • Experience in project management and leading pkg driven initiatives
  • Demonstrated proficiency with leading higher complex projects and cross functional teams
  • Strong problem-solving skills, collaborate to analyze pkg issues or opportunities to develop innovative or creating value added difference in use to the customer across multiple metrics
  • Ability to help drive pkg improvements/ material changes and share benefits
  • Ability to analyze and use historical and experimental data to determine optimum solutions
  • Knowledge of alternative/environmental materials and technologies including materials that have recycled content and/or can be recovered/ recycled
