Legal Regional Counsel

Position Summary and Primary Responsibilities

This position is based in Reynosa, Mexico or Texas, USA and will report on a solid line basis to Senior Managing Counsel – Employment Law located at Corning’s Headquarters in New York. The chosen candidate will provide labor, employment and compliance -related legal support to Corning’s businesses in Mexico with responsibility for advising regional Human Resources, Employee Relations, and Operational leadership on a variety of matters.The successful candidate will display a high level of technical proficiency, excellent written and verbal communications skills, and enthusiasm for working with highly collaborative teams in Mexico and the USA.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for Corning’s Mexico-based entities for primarily labor and employment-related matters and compliance issues.
  • Work closely with HR and Employee Relations on a variety of employment issues such as discipline, terminations, labor strategies, employment compliance, drafting policies and procedures as well as many other HR-related projects.
  • Apply knowledge of industry best practices to identify trends and minimize legal risks.
  • Delivering timely and comprehensive, accurate and practical legal advice and support to both local and global internal stakeholders.
  • Communicate and collaborate with Corning’s global lawyers by facilitating timely involvement of applicable legal counsel in business decisions.
  • 协助高级常务Counsel-Employment法律in managing the implementation and maintenance of ongoing evaluation of a regional compliance program, which includes identifying high risk areas within Corning’s regional operations and, in partnership with the businesses, recommending and implementing effective controls and processes, conducting internal investigations, and developing plans and training for mitigation of such risks
  • Assist Director, Compliance in proactively managing compliance concerns as well as other Compliance Program-related duties in Mexico
  • Work closely with Division Counsel supporting Mexico operations on a variety of commercial and business law matters, as needed.
  • Identify and implement training opportunities for business and HR clients on legal and compliance issues.
  • 米anage and direct outside counsel in cost-effective handling of labor claims, lawsuits, negotiations, and counseling on a wide array of complex legal, business, and risk management issues.
  • Perform additional legal duties as directed by the Senior Managing Counsel-Employment Law

Education and Licenses

  • Graduate from top tier law school
  • Ability practice law in Mexico

Experience

  • 8+ years of experience as a practicing attorney, with at least four years’ experience in a legal in-house position representing a Mexico entity (preferably in a diversified global company with manufacturing operations)
  • 5+years of experience as a practicing labor and employment attorney representing businesses located Mexico (preferably in Reynosa and/or Monterrey)
  • Ability to balance independent judgement with the need for collaborative teamwork.
  • Experience with interaction with regional stakeholders as well as global stakeholders including but not limited to legal teams and business leaders located in region and the USA
  • Effective negotiation, risk mitigation, and litigation prevention skills
  • Experience with practicing general business and corporate law
  • Expertise with global compliance laws and risks, including anti-corruption, data privacy, antitrust/competition, anti-boycott and global trade regulations
  • Fluent in English and Spanish
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to explain clearly (written and orally) complex legal or technical information to cross-functional leaders and professionals
  • Ability to meet critical objectives while considering the impact of the decisions and activities to achieve organizational goals

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience representing manufacturing operations in labor and employment and compliance matters
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one state in the USA where Corning operations are located.

Travel

  • The ability to travel to and work in Corning’s business operations in Reynosa, Mexico 85-90%
  • The ability to travel to Corning’s business operations in Monterrey, Mexico 10-15%.
  • Travel to Corning’s Headquarters located in Corning, New York, as needed.
