Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of the Position:

Corning Optical Communications’ Engineering Services department needs an Outside Plant Construction Inspector to join our Project Services group. The successful candidate will be responsible for outside plant fiber optic projects for a major customer in Pennsylvania. The position will be coordinating and managing day to day vendor activities for Fiber-to-the Home (FTTH) projects including single family, multi-dwelling, and FTTB (business) projects from construction to test and turn-up.

Major Roles and Tasks:

• Coordinate and act as a lead for the construction teams to deliver the intended short-term and long-term results and direct contractor activities as needed

• Adhere to project schedules through organizing & conveying schedules and timelines to construction vendors

• Review drawings and specifications to become completely familiar with the project

• Communicate with site superintendents, customers, and city officials about delays and any other issues that need my impede work project work

• Accompany vendors on pre-construction site surveys to verify cable routing, identify any obstacles that may result in additional construction costs, and take field measurements

• Monitor fiber optic plant construction activities to ensure products are being installed within customer guidelines and manufacturer standard recommended procedures

• Visit project sites to evaluate progress and respond to Project Manager or customers’ concerns or questions

• Ensure vendors are submitting daily reports outlining construction progress on all installations located in the assigned area of duty

• Provide daily updates to Lead Project Manager on overall safety, quality and production

• Provide support for material inventory audits as needed

• Review permits and Right-Of-Way considerations and associated requirements

• Ensure compliance with customer and industry specifications/standards while OSP is being constructed

Qualifications:

• Approximately 3 years of underground and aerial utilities knowledge

• Approximately 3 years of Fiber and Outside Plant knowledge

• Valid United States Driver's License with the ability to pass a motor vehicle check

• High School diploma or equivalent

• Extensive proven industry knowledge of aerial, buried and underground fiber optic installation methodologies

• Ability to handle several projects at once and be self-directed, takes initiative in seeking efficiencies of processes

• Read and understand FTTX (fiber to the home) CAD and IQGeo designs

• Working understanding of fiber optic network architectures

• Sound problem solving and decision-making processes and skills

• Result-oriented and responsive; utilizes network, Subject Matter Experts and other available resources to facilitate driving tasks to closure

• Strong interpersonal skills to support customer interface, consultative activities, and work as part of a commercial team

• Working knowledge of fiber optic testing procedures

• Extensive knowledge with Microsoft Office products: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook

Travel:

• This position is a hybrid remotely based role which requires onsite presence and travel between multiple project site(s)

• Onsite frequency will be dependent upon project needs

• Occasional overnights are expected (< 25%)

Work Environment:

• Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including climbing, sitting, standing, walking, and driving

• Regular exposure to all weather conditions, especially hot, humid and/or rainy spring, summer fall weather and cold snowy winter weather, combined with regular work time indoors in environmentally controlled conditions

• May be exposed to uncomfortable or distracting sounds or noise levels on sites of projects being managed or coordinated

• When working on site, will need to wear common protective safety equipment, such as safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, hard hat and safety vest
