Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

The Material Engineering intern will review and verify the alignment of key performance requirements, key critical to quality (CTQs) of current products, Corning material procurement specifications and technical data sheets of incoming raw materials.

Job Description:

• Collect high runner product data from global supply chain and work with PE group to collect material specifications.
• Consult vendors and obtain current material specs.
• Do a comparison between internal and external documentation and identify gaps.
• Monitor any material testing trials to confirm material properties Provide evaluation and analysis from Lab results.

Responsibilities:

• The material engineering intern will review and correct/update the raw material procurement specifications of exiting products with reference to raw material technical data sheets and product specifications.
• The intern will focus on developing an excellent correlation between the existing material procurement specifications and the product specifications - Make sure that raw material properties critical to the key product application requirements are listed in the material procurement specifications.

Prefer students with major in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering/Material engineering/Material Science (3rd year) and strong interest in the correlation between material properties and product application requirements.
• Expectations: Detail oriented, independent worker, engineering aptitude, strong written and oral communications.
• Prepare oral and written reports to summarize test results and key conclusions for technical audiences including Development, Engineering, and Operations.

Hours of work/ work schedule / flex-time:Basic work hours are 40hrs/week; 8am-5pm

Education and Experience:

• Enrolled in BS or MS program in engineering discipline such as mechanical, chemical, material engineeering or chemistry.
• Coursework completed to include first and second year engineering studies.
• GPA of 3.0 or above.

Required Skills:

• Computer literate in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Desired Skills:

• Course work/experience in plastic materials.
• Experience with PLM Software such as Windchill or SAP desireable.
• Relevant work/class experience.
