Scope of Position:

  • Process specialist supporting the ongoing technical needs of component production processes.
  • The focus of this role is to provide continuous improvement of existing manufacturing processes of precision opto-mechanical components, introduce new products into the production system and provide ongoing technical support to manufacturing personnel to ensure process reliability.
  • We are the first line of defense for all technical issues that arise during production. For more complicated issues, process engineers are encouraged to collaborate with other specialists, both internal and external to Corning.
  • Process Engineers are expected to utilize formal tools to identify root causes of variation such as 6-Sigma and scientific methodologies.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day production support to answer technical questions and resolve process upsets.
  • Identify and lead continuous process improvements to reduce cost (Variation, cycle-time, complexity and scrap reduction)
  • Collaborate with product development to introduce new products into the production system.
  • Collaborate with quality team to respond to customer complaints and returns.
  • Work with the commercial team to quote new products.
  • Specify new manufacturing capabilities via development of new techniques, or specifying new equipment, tools, fixtures, test equipment.

  • Train manufacturing personnel on new processes.
  • Stay ahead with the latest manufacturing trends and seek out the appropriate SME's when needed.
  • Assess existing manufacturing capability gaps and recommend future development activities.
  • Protect intellectual property by documenting key competitive processes.

Required Education & Experience:

  • We require a minimum 4-yr Engineering degree
  • 5+ years of demonstrated ability in a combination of the following: Plating, Metallurgy and Material Science, Diamond Turning, Generating, Centering & Polishing of Optical elements, Interferometric component metrology, Characterization of surface roughness and profilometry
  • Process capability measurement and analysis (Cpk)
  • Aptitude to learn technologies not familiar with
  • Strong communication - written, verbal, and presentations
  • Critical thinking to rapidly solve problems
  • Confidence in interaction with all levels of the organization (Production techs to Sr. Leadership)
  • Ability to function on a process engineering team of multi-disciplinary engineers

Travel Requirements:

  • We anticipate less than 10% travel for this role. Typical travel includes training, networking opportunities, customer visits, and benchmarking activities as required.

Hours of work:

  • Typical first shift production hours, M-F, 8am-5pm. Extra and off hours may be required during times of heightened project activity in order to meet the work you're doing.
