Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): This position is for an Optical Research Scientist working within the Characterization Sciences department of the Science and Technology division. The Optical Properties Laboratory (OPL) utilizes deep understanding of optical principles, concepts, equipment, and metrology to guide fundamental materials research and new product development. We are seeking a candidate having a sound understanding and hands-on experience with design and implementation of ultraviolet through infrared optical metrology techniques. The candidate must have experience and a strong interest in advancing and developing optical measurement methodologies to improve performance and expand capabilities to support a diverse portfolio of research, development, and production activities. This person will work with cross-functional teams conducting experiments to assess the optical properties of materials and relate the measured attributes to improving product design and performance. The candidate is expected to regularly perform optical analyses to characterize materials and develop new methods and optical configurations for non-routine measurements or processes as necessary.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Adhere to laboratory safety protocols

• Regular hands on work within a laboratory environment

• Serve as a technical subject matter expert for optical metrology

• Seek understanding of customer/project problem statement to identify technical challenges and needs

• Identify and implement proper test methods, and develop new methods as required, to evaluate optical properties of materials

• Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians to design and execute experimental plans to gain fundamental knowledge and address technical challenges

• Perform data analyses and interpretations

• Document and communicate results within reports

• Make recommendations to improve functional performance of materials and processes
