Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

• Reports to Research Director

• Conduct polymer materials research in support of all of Corning’s businesses, including Mobile Consumer Electronics, Optical Communications, Life Sciences, and Automotive.

• Conduct exploratory research in polymer / glass and composites

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Accountable for all aspects of lab safety and adherence to Corning Values

• Conduct hands-on experiments in a polymer chemistry lab.

• Collaborate with other scientists in the polymer process lab as needed (extrusion, injection molding, lamination).

• You will apply your knowledge of organic and polymer chemistry to develop new material systems (composites, laminates, coatings) with an emphasis on polymer physics and developing structure / property relationships

• You may lead project teams with scientists from Development, Engineering, and the Business units.

Travel requirements (please note if international): up to 10% in USA

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours / week ; 8 am – 5 PM / flex time as needed

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with focus on polymers

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates must possess):

• Personal dedication to continuous improvement in lab safety

• Ability to work in a collaborative manner in a multi-disciplinary team environment

• Demonstrated ability to solve difficult technical problems and deliver practical solutions that meet the application requirements along with the fundamental understanding of the chemistry that drives the performance

• Working knowledge of polymer mechanical properties and measurement techniques

Desired Skills (these are the skills that would be nice for candidates to possess):

• Knowledge of rheology of nanocomposites

• Knowledge of adhesive structure / property relationships
