Position Description:

The Optical Development Scientist will support the Advanced Optics Aerospace and Defense (A&D) business in development of new electro-optical products and associated processes, and be the key resource to drive and enhance the collaboration between the Corning (NY)-based R&D teams and the Keene (NH)-based Engineering organization

Responsibilities:

• Understand and participate in the A&D technology road-mapping activities, and help define technology direction for the business

• Assess gaps in the A&D portfolio based on customer needs and/or competitive benchmarking, and assist in developing business technology strategy to address

• Interface with the optics and materials R&D teams in Corning, NY, to understand applicability of new technology and innovation to address critical gaps in the A&D product line

• Act as the primary technology interface and promote collaboration between the R&D teams and the Keene (NH) engineering organization

• Lead early-stage programs to develop and deliver electro-optics products and processes by leveraging design concepts in geometrical and physical optics

• Apply fundamental knowledge of free-space optics and concepts such as diffraction, etendue, Helmholtz reciprocity, etc. for optical design

• Fulfill needs in A&D products for specification and application of electronic and electro-optical components and systems, such as power supplies, interconnects, photon counting cameras, servo systems and navigation components (such as GPS systems)

• Support the plant engineering and manufacturing organizations in transfer and trouble-shooting new products and processes by using technical knowledge and robust metrology tools

• Collaborate with the commercial team to develop value proposition, generate white papers, and support technical interactions with customers

• Stay abreast of technical trends and developments in the A&D industry by attending appropriate trade-shows and conferences

Education:

• Ph.D. or equivalent in Optics, Physics, Engineering or Astronomy

Experience and skills:

• 5+ year experience in design and/or development of electro-optic products

• Knowledge and experience in A&D industry and associated technologies preferred but not required

• Strong depth and breadth across optics and electronics, and ability to interface with other technology SME’s (mechanical, materials, reliability, etc.)

• Understanding of surface metrology instruments and optical fabrication techniques such as polishing and diamond turning

• Optical testing including Zernike and Seidel aberrations and their measurement

• Proficiency in Code V, Zemax, Light Tools, or similar ray-tracing software

• Experience in design and simulation of diffraction grating – RCWA, FDTD, etc.

• Well-versed in SolidWorks, Alibre, AutoCad or similar software

• Ability to use Matlab, MathCad, C++ or similar tools for mathematical analysis

• Strong technical curiosity, problem solving, and desire to seek out answers and solutions

Travel:

  • Up to 30% travel for this role, primarily domestic, to Keene, NH and to customer sites
