POSITION SUMMARY: Controls Engineer

This position will serve as an electrical control engineer for the wind engineering manufacturing support group at Corning’s Concord, NC facility. Their main responsibility is to ensure that complex fiber winding manufacturing equipment and processes meet daily production requirements in terms of safety, quality, and reliability. The candidate will monitor daily process attributes, initiate troubleshooting responses and drive process improvements.

This position requires the candidate to be versed in various controls platforms and electrical engineering principles. An ideal candidate will drive to fundamental process understanding and lowest cost producer objectives.

Job knowledge & Education level:

  • B.S. Electrical Engineering.
  • 1 or more year’s equipment/controls experience in manufacturing is preferred but not required.

  • Experience with Beckhoff, Allen Bradley or similar controllers and associated hardware including: PLC and I/O devices, motion control, and various communication protocols
  • Ability to generate, debug and modify PLC code – both ladder logic and structured text.
  • Sound understanding of AC/DC electrical theory, and practical application thereof.
  • Experience with electro-mechanical devices such as servo motors, valves, and sensing devices
  • Ability to generate and interpret electrical drawings using AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Ability to participate or lead project or process improvement teams. Essential Skills and Duties:
  • Provide high quality electrical process support for a fast-paced 24 x 7 manufacturing environment.
  • Adhere to site and Corporate safety procedures: Lock-Out Tag-Out and authorized work permissions.

  • Demonstrate strong equipment and process troubleshooting skills.
  • Work closely with support teams to understand and resolve equipment issues.
  • Ensure fiber wind equipment is safe to operate.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.

  • Working knowledge of data analysis techniques using Microsoft Excel and Access.
  • Familiarity with experimental design.
  • Understanding of Six Sigma techniques.
  • Knowledge of IEC-1131 programming methodology, closed loop control systems and PID tuning.
  • Understanding of NFPA and NEC safety codes and best practices
  • Provide trend analysis of key metrics and implement response plans. Hours, Schedule & Flex-time:
  • Standard 5-day work week, 40-45 hours/week. This position requires off-hours coverage on nights and weekends on a rotating basis with co-workers.
