Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of the Position:

The primary role in the position is to support outside plant fiber optic network design through the use of CAD/ Customer systems and design processes. Encompasses the use of integrated systems for computer-aided design used for the systematic representation and dimensional specification of mechanical and architectural structures. Prepares drawings or schematics for outside plant systems, equipment, and structures. Utilizes CAD digitizing techniques and skills. Digitizes and edits drawings consisting of components systems, or assemblies. Makes engineering computations and prepares and revises specifications. Creates base maps utilizing CAD and GIS based inputs from county, city, utility shapefiles and other as needed. Requires understanding and application of standard engineering or scientific theories, concepts, principles, and techniques. Requires the ability to develop and resolve solutions to routine technical problems. Able to work on projects and technical assignments are given without detailed instructions. Contacts are primarily with immediate project team or leaders, or other professionals in a similar group but can be routinely working as part of a larger project.

Education & Experience:

• Four-year degree from an accredited engineering program, BS Desired in Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical
• 5+ years of combined experience of fiber optic design

Required Knowledge and Skills:

• Successful candidate will have knowledge of AutoCAD, preferably Civil3D.
• Candidate must be able to develop “out of the box” solutions using multiple product sets.
• Experience designing fiber optic networks preferably using a centralized split topology.

Desired Skills:

• Permit drawings to include Right of Way permits, aerial make ready, and/or Traffic Control Plans.
• 3GIS experience
• Familiarization with Corning products
• Knowledge of Procore Technologies Construction Management Software.
• Familiarity with outside plant surveying using devices like Trimble and IKE and understanding the incorporation of data transfers from these devices into CAD.

Key Responsibilities:

• Selected candidate must be willing to remain in this position for a minimum of two years.
• Outside Plant Design Engineer will create complex CAD designs utilizing numerous layers and blocks and incorporate custom title blocks and custom layouts as needed or required by the customer.
• Work with Systems engineers in team environment to complete designs of varying detail level for customers.
• Create permit drawings for City, County, DOT, and MOT permits. Understanding of where to gather necessary utility information and annotate into the drawing package.
• Create underground bore profile drawings and/or aerial pole data tables.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks at a time and create methods to organize tasks into a project flow to be reported out on as needed

• Create High Level Design to define the path for the engineering fielding tech crew
• Assemble design in the most cost-effective method with understanding of the impact of construction and material cost and the optimization of Corning specified materials
• Use fielding data, photos, and sketches to create the design and provide feedback to walkout crews where questions remain
• Occasional site visits to obtain necessary design information and confirm design requirements with the customer could be required
• Ensure obstacles such as culverts, waterways, easements, aerial trespass, etc. are accounted for in the design
• Create construction level prints for OSP FTTX designs.
