The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

Scope of Position:

  • This role will be reporting directly to the Forming Department Leader, this position coordinates operational and quality team support for manufacturing operations, process improvement, and project development.
  • Responsibilities include providing technical guidance, process and system improvement recommendations, and statistical problem-solving techniques to manufacturing operations and project teams for more effective forming systems, process improvements, continuous improvements, and validation activities.
  • This position works closely with other functions within the organization (Manufacturing, Safety, Quality, and Engineering) and is responsible for the internal technological system development and process improvements.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily production support to resolve process issues that are inside and outside our standard operating parameters.
  • Maintain manufacturing processes using existing production assets.
  • Use and improve current metrology methods to monitor and improve manufacturing performance.
  • Evaluate and implement lean manufacturing systems.
  • Identify and lead process improvements to reduce cost (Variation, cycle-time, complexity, and scrap reduction)

  • Collaborate with the commercial and development engineering to extend our current capabilities to meet future needs.
  • Actively handles the data related to the day to day activities for all refractory supply and demand at each of stage in the refractory process.
  • Supports the upkeep and maintenance of forming, reforming, and refractory equipment.
  • Very strong communication skills to effectively update and keep entire team aligned with production deadlines
  • Leads directly up to Forming Department Leader and keeps them apprised of any potential production issues.
  • Interacts with forming operations, process engineering, quality, development, division, etc. to keep production moving harmoniously through challenges.
  • Actively participates in short- and long-term scheduling activities.
  • Active participant in bigger picture department activities such as improving layouts, tooling design, 5S activities, documentation, capacity planning, etc.
  • Performing calculations, quality tests, inspection and data entry.
  • Completes production logistics by moving / transacting materials and information through the production system.
  • Monitors process and records data.
  • Prepares material with plant systems (e.g. document control, manufacturing execution system).
  • Responsible for housekeeping and autonomous maintenance.
  • Actively engages with continuous improvement and cost reduction programs.

Experience:

  • We require a BS in Material Science; Chemical Engineering, Ceramics, Mechanical Engineering, or related major
  • Critical thinking to rapidly solve problems
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Desire to solve problems by using Statistical/6-Sigma/DOE and Hypothesis Tree problem solving methodologies.
  • Confidence in interaction with all levels of the organization (Production techs to Sr. Leadership)
  • Knowledge or Training in one or all of these areas: Six Sigma Lean, PEx, PI, SPC, and KT Problem Solving.
