Candlelight Vigil and Art Exhibit in Recognition of Domestic Violence Survivors
October 5, 2011 - @ The Columbia Art Center
What an amazing experience, ambience and energy!!! Stories of triumph and resilience. It was truly and honor to have been a part of such a remarkable event. A very special thank you to Linnet Caban and everyone one who contributed to/participated in the event! Thank you for all of the positive feedback and support. By request and due to an outstanding response, please see one of the poems I performed below. Let us continue to do God's work and stand for those who may not be able to stand for themselves.
I stayed... because I
Didn't want my children
To be without their father
So I... stayed
I stayed, because he told me
He loved me, because, he was
The only man, that ever loved me
And I... stayed,
Because he said he would take care of me
Because, I was too afraid to leave
Afraid to be... alone...
I thought I deserved it, I felt..
Undesired and helpless
So, I... stayed
I stayed because, black eyes and
Purple lips... can be concealed
Because if I left he would find me
And beat me worst
So I... stayed...
No I, stayed because
I needed to understand him better,
And this, this was all just, a misunderstanding...
Because..he said, he was sorry...
And I stayed... because, it would hurt
More to walk away...
Because..everything was in his name,
Because... my father was the same way???
So I, stayed...
And the day that I didn't wake...
I was still to blame...
The children, the children, they, were so
beautiful, at the funeral
Long ponytails and plaid skirts
There I stood, over the dry hollowness
Of my body wondering, why, I... stayed
